Re Danger server fiasco. If I were a MSFT stockholder, I would be be marching to Ballmer's office right now, torch and pitchfork in hand.

Amaaaazing how this whole Danger acquisition results in ZERO value in the legacy end (Sidekick) and ZERO value in the lead end (Project Pink). That's another half a billion (reportedly, since MS was mum about the acqui cost) down the infamous black hole of Redmond. Talk about the ability to make a spectacular nothing out of something.

Even better for the Pink (Danger) team.

"T-MOBILE AND MICROSOFT/DANGER STATUS UPDATE ON SIDEKICK DATA DISRUPTION
Dear valued T-Mobile Sidekick customers:

T-Mobile and the Sidekick data services provider, Danger, a subsidiary of Microsoft, are reaching out to express our apologies regarding the recent Sidekick data service disruption.

Regrettably, based on Microsoft/Danger’s latest recovery assessment of their systems, we must now inform you that personal information stored on your device - such as contacts, calendar entries, to-do lists or photos - that is no longer on your Sidekick almost certainly has been lost as a result of a server failure at Microsoft/Danger."

The Macalope is usually just amusing but this week's had me laughing: http://www.macworld.com/article/143233/macalope_mobile.html
..Which is funny because the Macalope remembers being told that Windows Mobile 7 was totally going to kick the iPhone’s ass up and down the street:
Apple iPhone Doomed To Failure — Windows Mobile 7 Plans For 2009 Leaked

That particular piece, which violates both the laws of logic and those of space/time, prompted the Macalope to respond at the time:

It’s amazing how future Microsoft products beat current Apple products time and time again, isn’t it? You’d think Apple would have just given up by now.

“Don’t get an iPhone! Wait! We’ve got something that will blow the iPhone away!” [fumble, fumble, sound of a chainsaw, sound of a cat howling, sound of a hammer, sound of three years passing] “Wouldn’t you rather have… this?!”

And what they reveal is a goat.

Not a figurative goat, a real goat. With a rotary-dial phone duct taped to it.

The goat is bleating plaintively.

Does anyone else think that “Pink Danger” sounds like a porn spoof of a Ian Fleming novel?

No, instead it reminded me a H. P. Lovecrafts novels and their servents, the shoggoths (shoggies).
