Sorry for those complaining but the mighty mouse is a brilliant device. I have owned one for each of my computers (wired and wireless). Yes the trackball acts up at times but I have found that using a can of compressed air on it always cleans it up right away. Yes it doesn't work on transparent/translucent surfaces but that's because its an optical device - simply placing a sheet of paper on the desk with an edge slid under your laptop so that one or two of the laptop feet holding it in place solves the problem.

You might be right, Benjamin; haven't used the Air enough to say you're wrong. The idea of tapping/pointing on you desktop's screen has smudges all over it. A really good trackpad, like the silky one the Blackbird only more functional, might just fit the bill.. it must have been considered already. The only problem I can see is that in hot humid weather a trackpad becomes a wet-land.

When I converted to Mac a few years ago I really really tried to like the Mighty Mouse but each time I bought a new iMac I went back to my Logitech after giving up on the Mighty Mouse. Then I bought a MacBook Air and fell in love with the trackpad. It is so much easier to use than a mouse. I threw away my travel mouse and used the multi-touch trackpad all the time. I wrote feedback to Apple pleading with them to make a stand-alone multi-touch trackpad I could use with my iMac. I really hope this is what is in the works.

The graphic's a trip down nostalgia avenue.. owned a beloved PB100 (wrote up my opus magnum on it) and then the insanely great PB540c (Blackbird) for five years. Loved the track-pad on the PB540. Skipped the MM (very unApple in its finickiness) and still use the rock-solid reliable single-button proMouse. But I can't wait to see see what they can do with a touch technology in a mouse.

I have a wired and wireless Mighty Mouse and can attest they are horrible. I've had to crack them open to get them to work, time and time again. The wireless one eats batteries galore. I did invest in a Logitech Bluetooth mouse but found it to be skittish and unreliable.

That Dvorak quote should be posted every time he blows off in the media. LOL!

I have often thought that the mighty mouse would be better with at touch pad surface on a slightly spherical surface perhaps about 3/4 to 1/2 inch in diameter rather than the finicky track ball.

I got tired of waiting, and just received a Wacom Bamboo Touch multitouch USB trackpad for my iMac. Love it so far. The Touch supports all of the standard single finger and two finger gestures: clicking, right clicking, dragging, scrolling, zooming, swiping, and rotating, and makes using my iMac almost identical to using my MBP.

Nice article.
I've not had any problem with the scroll ball cordless mighty mouse I got for my Mom (nor has she.) Nor has the optical sensor or touch sensor been an issue. But I admit, I use it only occasionally and she's not a power user.
Thanks for the full res diagrams.
And hello to Kasper (whomever that is.)
