That sounds nice and all, but the batteries in the new iPhones are overheating so the hardware as a whole is, well, bunk.

[Well thanks for the ridiculous anvil drop, Mr Wile E. Coyote, but it's not iPhone batteries that are overheating, it's a few users who pack their iphone into a tight case and leave it in the sun until the plastics turn brown. The iPhone hardware is pretty rock solid compared to the flimsy plastic crap that most phones are built from. A couple times a day I see somebody drop a Nokia-type cell phone and watch their back cover and "replaceable battery" skittering off across the floor. I also have a friend that insists on playing catch with his iPhone, regularly dropping it to the point where the glass is mostly shattered and large pieces are missing. It still works though - Dan]

John E - while you already can set up your own server to stream playlists to your iPhone, it's unlikely Apple would sanction such a complex thing as an easy to use, automated feature of iTunes. How would it or you license the broadcast? How could you dumb it down to the point of being usable to people who think it should just work ?

Seems like a feature that nobody would be happy with. If you want to set up an Icecast server yourself, you can do so with modifications that enable your iPhone to play back content from anywhere.

The only way I could see Apple making it work is if the company tied it into MobileMe like Back to My Mac, so that you could discover your home server remotely, and securely tunnel your stream to a registered device. Of course, I can't imagine that streaming audio over the mobile network would result in great battery life.

So when is Apple going to pull the trigger and let us stream iTunes content to the iPhone? it's absurd we can't now. have to buy an app like Simplify Music, and it can't stream video files which is most important since those big files can fill up the iPhone's storage quickly. plus synching/removing selected files to the iPhone manually is a continuing nuisance.

This is all fascinating and all, but I wonder how it's going to be implemented from the broadcast end of it. Will there be a new version of QuickTime Broadcaster? Darwin Streaming Server? QuickTime Streaming Server? Will existing desktop versions of QuickTime handle it, or must we await new versions? I'd love to see a follow-up article on how it's going to work from the standpoint of the radio or video broadcaster.

Peace,
Gene Steinberg
