When Scott talked about the in-app purchase API, he talked as if no existing apps include a content-purchase or service-purchase feature yet: for example, he said that you currently need a separate ebook app for each book. This worried me a bit, since it sounded like he was saying that Apple would require the use of their purchase API for apps that sell anything.

Looking at additional information I could find, it seems clear that instead Apple is simply providing an optional micro-payments API that developers can use, but are not required to use. Only paid apps can use this, because free apps don't involve signing a financial agreement with Apple. Apps like Stanza and the Amazon app that handle their own content purchases shouldn't be affected.
