The perceptions are there to be exploited by Apple, and speed is of the essence in this “right place at the right time” consumer market.

After successfully implementing Emoji, the iPhone 3G’s next obstacle to be cleared is definitely some sort of e-payment “touch-and-go” implementation, which would involve improving the on-board camera as well. Tens of millions of Japanese use this system also to allow entry to apartment buildings, remotely control home appliances such as heating and ovens, and inform parents when their children arrive at school.

Imagine the ways in which the App Store could extend this capability in conjunction with location-awareness as afforded by the 3G’s on-board GPS. The iPod Touch, however, would need a different approach.

In other news: Geeky and lonely American men “feel that young Japanese women have superior design.” Fortunately for the Japanese, this falls into the “never owned and never will” category.

It’s nice for Apple to be admired. Odd that it hasn’t translated into a sales boom in Japan (Apple is selling, but it’s rather “meh”).

It’s interesting that Toyota ranked so high. Style-wise, Toyotas are thought to be rather bland and uninteresting here in the US even while the vehicles are seen as well-built and well-engineered.
