i'm curious why their AppleTV survey was so targeted to recent purchasers? they know i have one since its early days, and they have my email, but clearly didn't seem to be interested in my opinion, or my usage. and the survey closed pretty quickly at any rate...

Although adding DVR functionality would compete with iTunes, Apple has never been afraid of competing with itself before. I'd really like to see iTunes able to import DVD's (with DRM is okay for now), import shows recorded from cable TV (with DRM is okay for now) and export any selected portion of a video to Apple TV or iPhone/Touch. It should even be able to export short segments without DRM (e.g., to Youtube).

I have heard Apple TV referred to as a video iPod. That is the best way to think of it. It works just fine in that context.
The only thing I really want is MORE HARD DRIVE SPACE. I have lots of mv4 videos and want them ALL on AppleTV.

EDIT: Another feature idea I forgot to mention - let you plug in an iPod and play any of the content stored on it (music, videos, photos). Even better, add a built-in iPod dock to the Apple TV so you don't even need a cable. Let you sync content from an iPod to the Apple TV or vice versa.

Apple's usually very good at providing an "integrated" experience - you buy one product and it handles everything for you. For example, you buy an iPod (hardware) and you manage it with iTunes (software). You buy a Mac (hardware) and it runs OS X (software). Everything is provided by Apple.

Apple TV is weird in that it's not a complete "top-to-bottom" solution like most of Apple's products. It doesn't replace your DVD player, it only plays a handful of video formats (so a lot of videos you have may not work with it without conversion), and it can play some types of content on-the-fly (movies) but not others (TV shows). It becomes just another box to add to the stack you already have under your TV.

I think for Apple TV to really take off, Apple needs to treat it like its other products. Make it THE one device you need that handles *everything* you'd ever want to do with your TV. Let you hook up external DVD and Blu-ray drives through USB. Add Remote Disc support so you use your computer as a DVD player. Let you stream and download both movies and TV shows. Allow you to plug in external USB hard drives to expand storage, so you're not stuck filling up your computer's hard drive or constantly swapping stuff on and off the Apple TV. Add support for more video formats so it can instantly play anything you throw at it. Etc.

This survey is no longer available. Anyone any idea how long it was open? I'm a bit miffed as I've had my AppleTV from when the 160GB came out and have plenty of feedback I'd like to give. Do they want the feedback or not?

My use never seems to get mentioned by anyone else, though others must do the same. I pump my lossless ripped music collection out through the optical-digital into a decent DAC for serious HiFi listening. Not as good as the dedicated CD player (an unfair comparison because of price) but it's so acceptable that I rarely bother putting CDs on now, preferring AppleTV convenience, especially when combined with iPhone remote meaning my TV doesn't have to be on at the same time.

Never buy anything though, so perhaps I'm not their favourite customer. Watching on-demand streamed Vodcasts from my armchair is another revelation on how TV really should be in the 21stC.

AppleTV should go bigger and better IMHO. Me want a full on media hub as an independent home for my iTunes library.

Fortune Magazine cited RDM as a source, but didn't call Enderle for a rebuttal? Wow.
