Dan, if Obama is the political analog to Apple and McCain to Microsoft, does that make Ron Paul the analog to Linux or the open source community at large? A well-meaning, but unrealistically populistic (and conspiratorial) movement that likes to repeat the notion that there's no difference between the two main choices?

Thanks for contributing so much time and energy for so little pay and recognition to online (and print, for that matter) tech (and now, political) journalism/analysis.

VeoSotano and others:

Yes, Dan does cross the line sometimes, but he is a great analyst and his opinions are always worth serious consideration.

I too am not from the US. That means I don't get a vote, but it does not mean that "I don’t give a shit".

The entire world economy is in trouble now, thanks to the way the US has been administered over the last 8 years, so we are all affected by what happens in this election.

Whatever your political allegiance, the fact remains that the world's technology industry will be facing very different problems depending on who is the next US President.

Daniel Eran Dilger would be irresponsible in his mission of explaining the direction and future of technology if he did not take that into account.

Taking sides on a debate between a spokesman and a no-show, or even a no-comment, may be difficult, but the fact that one side of the Presidential campaign has a serious understanding of the current state of technology while the other side does not should be a serious concern not just for technology commentators and people who work in the technology industry, but for all US voters.

Well, that's a shame, you should get paid for RD, I think they are the best read around on the 'net, and you are often certainly more right than a lot of analysts and pundits. I don't hate your sharing of political views, it's just that since I'm not from the US, I don't give a shit ;)

We, all of your loyal readers, should then make a "spread the love" campaign, and actually start to make use of those kind of sites. For my part, I haven't used any of them apart from occasional stumbling upon them, but all of the people that do, should be submitting your articles. By the way, why don't you submit them? I'm sure that a lot of people would digg them (or the equivalent on the other sites) and you would gain more audience, getting some more ad money...

Cheers,
Miro

daniel, are you going to only write political related stuff in your blog from now on, and leave all the tech things to apple insider?

I miss the good old computer history articles and the pundits bashing :'(

Anyway, keep up the great work!

Miro

[Hi Miro - well first off, this is a tech article. Second, I get paid for writing for others; I get paid virtually nothing from RD, certainly nothing close to the work I put into it. I tend to write about whatever is getting me the most excited or angry at any given point. Also, nearly all the work I do is flatly ignored. Every good article I write is paraphrased virtually verbatim by paid columnists that often don't even cite me as the original source, and readers that do enjoy reading my articles rarely submit them to sites like Slashdot, Digg or Reddit that would garner an audience worth reaching just for the fun of doing it.

So I end up writing bland soup that is broadly palatable that hits an audience large enough so that the people who paraphrase it are compelled to at least credit the source, which I don't really even get credit for, but do get some payment. Or, in the case of this article, I end up publishing it myself because publishers decided it was too "one sided" because McCain didn't bother to show up.]
