So is 6.9 million iPhones the number sold to channels or actual subscribers? According to another AppleInsider article, AT&T said there were 2.4 million iPhone activations. So if AT&T in the U.S. accounts for around 50%-60% of the market, then worldwide would be around 4.0 to 4.8 million iPhone activations for the quarter.

@bc: "you can see from the same conf call that there were total 19M Blackberry subscribers by the end of the quarter (8/30)."

They only have 19 million subscribers total? So the iPhone already has almost half as many?

a little additional fact that you'll notice if you examine RIMM's latest quarter results:

although RIMM sold 6.1M new devices in the quarter, they only added 2.9M new subscribers. i.e. more than half must have been upgrades. http://tinyurl.com/53g43a

you can see from the same conf call that there were total 19M Blackberry subscribers by the end of the quarter (8/30).

one of the analysts at the Apple conference call this week picked up on this little detail and suggested to Steve Jobs this makes the iPhone results even more impressive. see the question/comment from Charles Wolf:

sorry daniel, your graph is wrong. you forgot the 1,7 million in q1 2008 (calendar year) and rim sold 6,1 million in the quarter ending august.
my graph here: www.knebel.info/iphone/
