Great article. I've written up a post covering Sproutcore from a business angle and why it is important:

1/3 of AIR is WebKit - one of the aims with AIR is to let AJAX developers loose on the desktop (thus increasing the reach of Adobe's tools and development community).

The Flash part - well if AJAX is just DHTML, Flash is just JavaScript + some drawing APIs. The speed advantage it once offered is being eroded by improvements in JavaScript engines (Mozilla will be using the same one).

I'm not dismissing Flash - we're using it for developing RIA ourselves - but only because the requirement is 'must be deployable under IE6'. It's also always going to be one step ahead of the browser makers - they implement standard video tags, just as Flash 10 implements custom graphic filters.

However, we don't use any of the video facilities of Flash, so increasingly something like Sproutcore is going to get closer to what 'most' apps need.

John - every native iPhone app that does something over the internet (say connecting to Twitter's API) is making things 'more' proprietary. Is that a problem, so long as the API and protocols are open?? HTTP may be more important than HTML.

AIR, goodness, I hope not!

If the web ever ends up a proprietary place, property of Adobe or anyone else, sign me up to something else.

Fortunately, I just don't think they can do it any more. The tide's against them.

I don't buy it. Sproutcore can only be as fast and featured as AJAX which is just a hack off of DHTML invented by MS in 1997. I don't like it, but my bet's on a new platform - AIR or something similar.
