[...] Did anyone else get told by Autodesk that apple is selling off its pro apps? A friend of mine was told by an Autodesk employee this rumor. I don’t really believe it. Little OT but I thought it goes with my last post a little. http://www.roughlydrafted.com/2008/02/12/is-apple-shedding-its-final-cut-pro-apps-at-nab/ [...]

If you've ever made a high end purchase, you'll know why these apps are the 'goose that lays the golden eggs'. If you want a high end edit or production infrastructure, your immediate instinct is that you won't get the features you need from apple because they are 'Apple' and are too expensive. But when you sit down and do the math, an overpriced Mac Pro with Apple Pro apps will ALWAYS be more cost effective than any hobbled together alternative from PC vendors, and of course higher quality. Macs on their own are generally overpriced, but the hardware margin include the 'insanely great' tax that not a lot of people (pundits) take into consideration. For iLife apps etc. this isn't so obvious, but for Pro apps it's impossible to ignore. I only wish they'd bought Steinberg and not Emagic ;)

I don't have that much to say on the subject of professional apps, but I have some stuff to say about Apple's software.

Wherever possible, I try to use Apple's own software. This is why:

1. Best compatibility with hardware - All software written by Apple is designed to run with Apple hardware, which is obviously an advantage.

2. Best integration - Everything Apple is integrated. When you use iCal, you can create an event and tell it to invite people. It then takes your Address Book contacts and creates an invite. It then sends it out using Mail. When people reply, Mail automatically communicates with iCal and puts them on the attendee list. Perfect integration.

3. Best support - Everything is updated regularly, and bugs are fixed promptly.

4. Consistent interface - Everything looks the same, everything works the same way, everything achieves the same great result.

5. Cheaper - iLife is bundled. iWork is less than $100 bucks, which is more than can be said of MS Office. Mail is bundled. Safari is a free download. iChat is bundled.

hi. i'm a video editor who gave up on going to nab years ago. it was just a waste of time & money for me. i've also been using an avid since version 2 (1990) and am in the process of switching to fcp.

Going along the CADD theme, I think that is the one area among the "artistic" disciplines that Apple has completely ignored--specifically for the Pro Apps. This has always puzzled me considering Job's obvious love of architecture. While I think it highly unlikely (and wouldn't benefit me directly in the graphic arts field), I would love to see Apple buy Autodesk and start moving its user base exclusively towards the Mac. While Autodesk is keeping Maya on the Mac, they are hardly a company that gives warm fuzzies to a long-term commitment to the Mac platform. I know that there has been efforts to get them to port AutoCad to Mac for eons, but that has largely fallen on deaf ears as the Mac market has just not justified the investment for them. I do know many architects that would love to be fully decked out in all Apple hardware glory. And even with Intel inside™, Autodesk admits that AutoCad functions "correctly" in Bootcamp, but they still will not support it on "Apple computers." So, failing that route, Apple should identify the best CADD app currently running on OS X and buy it--then apply all the Apple Pro App magic to it and start kicking Autodesk butt-. Come to think of it--that may be why Autodesk hedged their bets against Apple by acquiring Maya and they use it to keep Apple out of the CADD arena. It's a thought at least.

Robert.Public - if you want a capable CADD app that is cross platform take a look at VectorWorks. That is what we use.

Back to trade shows per se: I agree with the logic of this article. If you are in a business that can demonstrate and distribute product electronically, or through VARs or Retail Outlets participation in costly trade shows is hard to justify. Especially if you are an established company.

The remaining successful trade shows are all in the heavy industry, machine tool, heavy equipment sectors. Examples: Hamburg Messe; Farnsborogh; MachineExpo etc.

Unless you are new to the industry or have a new product the main attraction of trade shows is for the participant not the exhibitor; i.e., networking.
