[...] Tom Krazit of CNET and Eric Savitz of Barrons Deny the Jesus Phone Is Ten Million iPhones a Stretch? Sacconaghi based his iPhone sales worries on the idea that Apple sold around 180,000 iPhones per week in the winter quarter. Multiply that by 52 weeks and you only get 9.3 million, just short of Apple’s 10 million goal. But it gets worse. [...]

Contradiction?
"Stuffing its own retail channel would be ridiculous, and dumping unsold inventory on AT&T’s several hundred stores wouldn’t be very clever either.

Apple has around 200 retail stores, about 1,900 AT&T partner stores selling the iPhone, and"

Is it "several hundred" or 1,900?

Here in Russia iPhones are everywhere. "Officially" unlocked (from France) costs about $2000 and hacked one about $800. In Russia ALL phones are sold unlocked - and SIM cards are sold separately, so the market is almost free. The only thing which makes switching operators difficult is the fact you cannot keep your phone number when you switch (each provider has its own set of prefixes). So the iPhone will never be available in Russia officially. :( Honestly I do not like the model Apple has selected. So we will continue to import phones and unlock them. :)

These pundits just need to look on Ebay to see what's going on with the iPhone. In the UK i've seen iPhones going for as much as £700 which is nuts.

The idea that these phones might be sitting in a warehouse just waiting to be loved is a little ludicrous; I live in Australia (I wouldn't touch Telstra with a ten foot pole either, by the way) and from the prevalence of iPhones here you wouldn't believe that they're not yet available for sale.

Admittedly I work in a very technical environment, but finding myself in a room where half the people own iPhones no longer surprises me. It just brings a wry smile to my face, especially as - like most other techos - we all support Windows. We earn money supporting crap which we then choose to spend on class. :-)

Dan, well done, another pragmatic deconstruction of the shills.
I was intrigued by -
"As with any conspiracy theory, there is plenty of numerology to back up the conclusions that need to be drawn to make the story work ..."

Not sure if you meant to use "numerology" as opposed to numeration, but somehow Numerology - the branch of knowledge that deals with the occult significance of numbers - seems more fitting for the charlatans.

I'm interested in travel to the Philippines and so I looked up what it would take to unlock my iPhone while I was there.

It turns out there is a group of iPhone enthusiasts that are steadily growing, despite retail prices of over $1,000 per iPhone. At the time I looked at their message board, there was a fellow who had quite a business of unlocking units purchased in the US for about US$200. (This was before unlocking software was readily available on the web.)

The Philippines is a very poor country with very few people capable of paying this kind of money for a phone. I can only imagine what iPhone demand in places like Hong Kong and Singapore would be.

It seems plausible that Apple might have sold 0.5m - 1m of these phones overseas with the remainder going to inventory and phones that were bought late in the quarter but not activated until early in the next.

Come to think of it, many iPhones were bought during the holidays, while people were away from home and their computers, and so it's at least plausible that 100k or so of them could not be activated until the gift recipient returned home and started the new year/quarter.

Thanks Daniel, You are the voice of reason, as usual.

It has been printed in other forums that four million iPhones sold was a Mac World statement and not repeated in the earning call, implying Jobs was actually voicing units shipped rather than sold which they could not do in the earnings call.

The transcript of the earnings call states " We were very pleased with the iPhone momentum and customers continued to rave about their iPhones. We sold over 2.3 million iPhones during the quarter". So, add this to 1.7 million in the previous quarter and you get the 4 million and potential SEC problems and shister lawer lawsuits if you didn't actually book sales of 2.3 million units in the quarter.
