[...] Symbiotic: What Apple Does for Open Source Apple’s Open Source Assault Microsoft’s Unwinnable War on Linux and Open Source Bill Gates and Bugs. Open source is about progress, and making progress involves being aware of your own mistakes. Microsoft is about profits. That’s why Bill Gates famously told Focus magazine back in 1995: “The reason we come up with new versions is not to fix bugs. It’s absolutely not. It’s the stupidest reason to buy a new version I ever heard. When we do a new version we put in lots of new things that people are asking for. And so, in no sense, is stability a reason to move to a new version. It’s never a reason.” [...]

I had been wondering just how much Apple gives back to open source. Really enjoying these unique, but understandable topics. He's on a roll.

Didn't want anyone overlooking CUPS either.

Apple had been very involved with its development prior to their acquisition of the code base. And now they're even more involved.

Off topic: Dan, I often have to come back to read your articles when I don't have interruptions and can concentrate! What I would love to see, is a short 'executive summary' of the article at the top, with say just the bullet points of the main points.

This might also have the positive effect of enabling other bloggers to pick up on, quote and and recommend RDM to others...

Just a thought.

Rendezvous (now Bonjour) and is both an open spec and Apple offers an open source implementation.

Other things Apple has opened up have been "hey take it, please" kind of stuff, from Darwin Streaming Server to NetInfo and launchd. It seems unlikely that anyone in FOSS would be likely to actually add launchd to their OS. It seems it was opened largely for the benefit of Mac developers, as is the case with Darwin in general. The fact that Apple is offering some of its core OS tech for free is pretty progressive though.

Darwin Streaming Server & Calendar Server are pretty significant new products to be opened for outside use in order to foster open standards adoption.
