This has been a great series of analyzing the portrayal of Leopard.

One feature that would have been worth mentioning in this article is resolution independence. The iPhone has it and I think it was previously mentioned. On the iPhone, you can zoom in and out and the text is always smooth. The text is scaled smoothly to whatever size you want on the output. On Leopard, there is no equivalent feature. I was hoping the Universal Access zoom would allow smooth text (not an anti-aliased version of the output bitmap).

More importantly, I was hoping for a way to scale everything to a larger version so I could use an HD TV as a monitor. As it is, that resolution at a comfortable distance would render all text illegible, but scaling everything up would allow very crisp text at a reasonable distance. Granted, there would be less screen real estate, but that will always be the tradeoff.

@Baroosk - Show Path Bar from the Finder View menu.

I should have also mentioned spring loaded Dock folders, which once you figure out you'll never know how you did without. Particularly awesome for drag and drop, and it works with every app. Basically, you drag to a Dock icon, then hit spacebar to switch to that app. Joy.

@avocade - Apple hasn't published numbers for the Apple TV, but Scott Woolley of Forbes gave his estimate of 250,000 (other pundits suggested sales of 2 million this year, which is likely very high). Woolley was trying to spin the number as a failure.

<a href="http://www.roughlydrafted.com/2007/09/17/scott-woolley-attacks-apple-tv-in-forbes-gets-the-facts-wrong/" rel="nofollow">Scott Woolley Attacks Apple TV in Forbes, Gets the Facts Wrong</a>

Reader Timothy Bandy pointed out that TiVo subscriptions were only up 136,000 over last year, indicating that "if Apple sold 250,000 Apple TVs, it’s already doubled the amount of new customers Tivo made last year; or to put it another way, they already have 1/7th of Tivos’ customer base without hardly trying. And as you pointed out, I doubt they’ve lost several million bucks in the process."

The important concept is that Apple isn't losing money by the tens of millions (or billions, in the case of Microsoft) in the difficult business of TV media center products. That leaves flacks to hold up the Apple TV against the success of the iPhone and iPod, and call it a "failure" in comparison. In reality, the Apple TV is tagging along behind the successful iTunes, meaning Apple is selling it without really trying. It has also bundled a "virtual Apple TV" into Leopard as Front Row.

dammit, there's no edit button.
"Those numbers do not measure success or desire."

I'd rather have said...
Those numbers alone do not measure success or desire.

Apple has not reported sales for Apple TV. It was downplayed by Steve Jobs in May as a "hobby" and there have been no mile-marker press releases. It's safe to assume that it's not flying off shelves the same as iPod, iPhone and Macs.

I think Daniel's point (correct me if I'm a dummy) is that it's a part of a profitable and successful business for Apple. A few hundred thousand Apple TV sales is break even to small profit for Apple while 12 million XBox 360's is BILLIONS of dollars in losses for Microsoft. The shills Daniel smacks around hide behind unit sales and market share. Those numbers do not measure success or desire.

Paul Thurrot really has to be the most ridiculous commentator that ever was.

But you know what, the really funny thing is that what he says and does fits PERFECTLY with how Microsoft behaves.

Its as if there is some weird brain disease out there that scientists have yet to discover.

wookie, I put things in the trash because they're old or are cluttering my workspace. When I empty the trash I've decided everything in there is good to be gone. Secure empty takes a lot of time but that's what I'd really rather do. I like your idea of doing it in the background. A check box in on a preference pain would be a nice way to do it.

I must have missed the Apple TV sales numbers. (Thought I'd paid due attention during the Quarterly's.) Can you post them in the comments and compare them to the TiVo sales for clarification?
