"Having shamed Motorola, Palm, Nokia, Sony Ericsson, and LG in delivering a phone with advanced hardware and software features,"

Whilst I agree that the gPhone is no iPhone rival, I would question the above statement. How exactly did Apple shame Nokia?

Nokia just announced a record 85% boost in profits. They now have 39% market share, which is incredible for such a competitive market. They also sold 16 million smartphones in just one quarter, giving them over 50% market share in that segment.

The iPhone is a great phone but it's not perfect. I'm certainly tempted to swap mine already for the new Nokia N95 8GB edition (available for free on Vodafone UK). The lack of 3G annoys me no end. There's also a lot of software annoyances that show just how immature Apple's software platform is for phones. Why can't I send SMS to multiple recipients or forward SMS? It's just bizarre that the iPhone is missing functionality that I would have expected as standard 7 years ago.

LOL @ gus...

"Goonux" is the perfect name for a Google backed Linux distro. They could even get Corey Feldman and Martha Plimpton to advertise for it. Perfect.

Great article. I just wanted to add that the iPhone isn't Apple's first foray into the cellular phone space. Apple probably learned a bit of the mobile hardware biz from its partnership with Motorola to produce the ROKR line of phones. Judging from the bitter comments from Motorola after details of the iPhone surfaced, Apple probably walked out of that deal with more than they bargained for, and a cynical view would be that they never intended to produce a quality product with Motorola--exploiting the partnership to familiarize themselves with the market.

So if even Apple can't/won't go into the mobile phone business blindly, it's very hard to imagine Google doing so, and after the Apple/Motorola association, they probably won't find much help elsewhere.
